APPETITA – A Virtual Server Who Ends Needless Waiting

Beyond being guys who love to eat and hate to wait, Stephan and Jörg created APPETITA with a vision of using technology to connect restaurants and guests for a richer, more intentional experience.

The APPETITA team is Jörg Wasmeier, Full Stack Developer, and Stephan Winkler, User Experience and Interaction Designer. The two have been working together for more than 5 years. The pair began exploring the idea of a virtual waiter at the SIX Hackathon in March of this year. They took home the win, and an understanding that they had tapped into a market need. That idea became APPETITA, a virtual server who ends needless waiting and streamlines restaurant service for increased sales and happier guests.

Beyond being guys who love to eat and hate to wait, Stephan and Jörg created APPETITA with a vision of using technology to connect restaurants and guests for a richer, more intentional experience. Simply put, “we expand restaurant service potential by delegating mundane tasks to virtual waitstaff.” This allows restaurants to be more profitable, and guests can focus on what they love: food, conversations, and atmosphere.

“In the last 6 months with the F10 accelerator, we’ve become better business people. Some of the most valuable learning take-aways were ones that I didn’t expect. We learned about building a great team, the art of negotiation, and that if you have everything under control, you’re too slow. We’ve learned that business is always about people, and we’re working hard to keep that focus.”

The team will be presenting APPETITA to the masses at IGEHO hospitality and gastronomy conference in Basel, Nov. 18th-22nd in the Newcomers Area in Hall 1, Booth 151. On the technology front, the team is weeks away from releasing version 1 of APPETITA.

Building APPETITA has made me extremely conscious of the amount of time required for traditional service in restaurants. I got curious and decided to make a little experiment. When we were accepted to the F10 Accelerator back in June, I began tracking the time that I’ve spent waiting to order or pay at restaurants. I was astonished. It’s been less than 6 months and I’ve already cumulatively spent more than a day of my life waiting for service. And I think my stats must be on the low side; my girlfriend and I almost always cook at home.

I’m going to begin publishing my weekly totals on twitter with #appetitacouldhavesavedme just for fun. Join me, or say hi: @APPETITA_AI
